Intercepts and Asymptotes

Read a rational graph from its equation before you sketch it.

Jump to section:

VA: denominator = 0

HA: divide the leading coefficients

What to Remember

Vertical asymptote

Set the denominator equal to 0. Cancel a common factor first if there is one. The cancelled factor is a hole, not an asymptote. These items do not cancel.

Horizontal asymptote

When the numerator and the denominator are both degree 1, divide the coefficients of x.

Intercepts

The x-intercept uses numerator = 0. The y-intercept uses x = 0, if that value is allowed.

Sketch

Draw the asymptotes, plot the intercepts, and approach the asymptotes from each side.

Easy
