Gradient

Find the gradient of the line through two points.

Jump to section:

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

What to Remember

Gradient

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

Rise over run. Subtract in the same order on the top and the bottom.

Sign

A line that rises as x increases has a positive gradient. A line that falls has a negative gradient.

Horizontal

Equal y-coordinates mean the rise is 0, so the gradient is 0.

Vertical

Equal x-coordinates mean the run is 0. The gradient is undefined. The equation is x = a constant.

Easy

m = 36

m = 12

Answer: 12

1
Find the gradient of the line through A(1, 2) and B(4, 3).
Show Answer

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

m = 3 − 24 − 1

m = 13
